Step 2. Break Down The Problem

To complete the Step 2 enter all the Break Down Problem details and confirm that the step is completed. Prioritized Problem is mandatory to describe before completing the Step 2.

What is the size of the problem? What data do I have? What are the component parts of this problem? How much will I address at this point?
Draft a summary map of process, or machine schematic e.g.
• SIPOC
• Spaghetti map
• process map
• blueprint
Measure key features of the process problem e.g.
• Bar chart
• line graph

Instructions

  • State the gap at the top of the breakdown (convert from % to actual numbers wherever possible)
  • Break down the problem by different categories to narrow the problem (product line, machine, week, material, etc)
  • Aim for 5 levels of breakdown (see example on right)
  • Once you find a narrow problem (Prioritized Problem), walk backwards through the process to find the first place it occurs (Point of Occurrence)

Note: You are not allowed to confirm as a completed the step 2 before completing the step 1.
